Working Creatively with Cross-cultural Issues and Diversity in Therapy

The day workshop will aim to explore the concepts of culture, race and ethnicity and their relationship to the individual. We will consider cross-cultural differences in meanings and value systems, the impact of stereotyping, racism and language/translation issues. We will discuss ways of engaging with these therapeutically, including the use of the concepts of transference and countertransference. The day will consist of some teaching but the key themes will be explored mainly through discussion of clinical material and some experiential work. Participants will be invited to consider ways that they can incorporate cultural issues in their clinical practice and share their own clinical vignettes and dilemmas.

Dr Zack Eleftheriadou is a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, Chartered Counselling Psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (HCPC reg). She lectures and has published widely in developmental issues and in the cross-cultural field, including the text: Psychotherapy and Culture: Weaving Inner and Outer Worlds (Karnac)
